UOTC Science Literacy: Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment

Monday, May 6, 2013 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Endocrine disruptors are synthetic or natural chemicals that can interfere with the normal function of hormones in humans and other animals. Examples of such synthetic chemicals are bisphenol-A (BPA) leached from some plastics, and EE (ethinyl estradiol), the active component in birth control pills that enter surface waters via the sewage system. This course will introduce the nature of chemical compounds in general and those specific to hormone disruption. The occurrence of hormone disruptors in the environment, and mode of action in humans are described. No previous knowledge of science or math is required.
