Monthly HAVOQ Queer/Trans Prisoner Penpal Night & Discussion Group

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join HAVOQ’s Prison Abolition & Prisoner Solidarity workgroup for our Monthly Prisoner Letterwriting & Discussion Night! Every month we will begin the night with a discussion of current issues within the criminalization system/prison industrial complex.

This month we are joined by a guest, S Lamble, from the London-based Bent Bars Collective. S Lamble also wrote the chapter in the book Captive Genders that was part of the inspiration for this workgroup! The chapter is called “Transforming Carceral Logics: 10 Reasons to Dismantle the Prison Industrial Complex Through Queer/Trans Analysis and Action.”

**We’re hoping folks can come ready to join in a discussion! If you have a copy of the book, read the chapter! If you don’t have the financial means to get the book right now, email flyingoverwalls@gmail.com and we’ll send you a copy of the chapter.

We’ll then spend the rest of the night writing letters to incarcerated loved ones and penpals. Don’t have a penpal yet? We’ll have an orientation to review guidelines for being a penpal and look through the letters of potential queer & trans penpals. There will also be space to share from powerful, touching or difficult letters you have already received.

The run-down:
6-6:15, arrive, settle-in
6:15-6:45, facilitated discussion about current topics/issues around queer criminalization
6:45-8:15, find/write to your personal penpal &/or loved one &/or make birthday cards for political prisoners

Please invite friends, family, and other organizations that you work with. And, if you can, please bring some stamp money or a snack to share.

*** We’ll check our PO Box a few days before the event, so stay tuned to this page or join our googlegroup by emailing flyingoverwalls [at] gmail [dot] com in order to be notified if we have received letters addressed to you and to hear about other work we’re doing!

Modern Times has zines, books and resources available if you just want to come and learn something and they can mail books to prisons if you get inspired.
