Monthly HAVOQ Prisoner Penpal Night & Study Group!

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join HAVOQ’s Prison Abolition & Prisoner Solidarity Workgroup for our September monthly penpal night (every 4th Wed night) as we… “create relationships of friendship, support, and solidarity between inside and outside folks and help break isolation for incarcerated members of our communities.” (MPCP)

Each month, we will gather and begin the night with a short discussion of current issues within the criminalization system/prison industrial complex. We will then pass around the lists and letters of potential penpals so you can find your perfect match. We have letters from queer & trans prisoners from around California as well as across the country who are looking for everything from personal to political to romantic connections. Making a real life connection to someone behind bars is one of the most important ways to fight the PIC, which is *designed* to isolate folks from their families and communities.

We’ll review guidelines for being a penpal and then spend the rest of the time writing to our penpals &/or decorating birthday cards to political prisoners. If you can, please bring some stamp money and a friend!

The run-down:
6-6:15, arrive, settle-in
6:15-6:45, facilitated discussion about current topics/issues around queer criminalization (in sept, we’ll discuss upcoming election/ballot issues including props 34 & 35)
6:45-8, make birthday cards for political prisoners and &/or find/write to your personal penpal

Please invite friends, family, and other organizations that you work with. We can even arrange to pass along letters if you want to start your own letter writing night or can’t attend on Wednesdays.

*** & We’ll check our PO Box a few days before the event, so stay tuned to this page or get on our googlegroup list by emailing flyingoverwalls [at] gmail.com in order to be notified if we have received letters addressed to you and to hear about other work we’re doing!

We’ll also have readings and resources available if you just want to come and learn something.
