HAVOQ’s Monthly Queer/Trans Prisoner Letterwriting & Discussion Night

Thursday, March 28, 2013 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join HAVOQ’s Prison Abolition & Prisoner Solidarity workgroup for our Monthly Prisoner Letterwriting & Discussion Night!

On a new night & in a new, close-to-BART and fully-accessible space, thanks to our hosts, PODER!

Every month we will begin the night with a discussion of current issues within the criminalization system/prison industrial complex. We’ll then spend the rest of the night writing letters to incarcerated loved ones and penpals.

MARCH TOPIC: Gendered Violence & the PIC

Readings:

1. “Arrested Justice: Black Women, Violence, and America’s Prison Nation” by Beth Ritchie
audio: http://bit.ly/WAG6fp
video: http://bit.ly/136BrFT

2. “On Rape, Cages, and the Steubenville Verdict” by Black Girl Dangerous. http://bit.ly/YJUctu

Please come with questions, discussion topics etc!

Don’t have a penpal yet? We’ll have an orientation to review guidelines for being a penpal and look through the letters of potential queer & trans penpals. There will always be space to share from powerful, touching or difficult letters you have already received.

Please invite friends, family, and other organizations that you work with. And, if you can, please bring some stamp money or a snack to share.

The run-down:
6-6:30, arrive, settle-in, bring snacks to share or your own dinner!!
6:30-7:00, introductions, facilitated discussion about current topics/issues around queer criminalization
7:00-8:15, find/write to your personal penpal &/or loved one &/or make birthday cards for political prisoners &/or talk abolition politics

*** We’ll check our PO Box throughout the month, so stay tuned to this page or join our googlegroup by emailing flyingoverwalls [at] gmail [dot] com in order to be notified if we have received letters addressed to you and to hear about other work we’re doing!
