Excluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive

Thursday, October 10, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join brilliant local artist, writer, and performer Julia Serano for a reading, discussion and signing of her new book “Excluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive”

Thursday October 10th, 7PM

Julie Serano—trans woman, bisexual, femme activist, and author of the revolutionary, bestselling book Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity—has spent much of the past ten years challenging various forms of exclusion within feminist and queer communities. In Excluded, Serano examines different forms of marginalization that are often based on the premise that certain ways of being gendered or sexual are more legitimate, natural, or righteous than others.

In “Excluded,” Serano points out that while feminist and queer movements are designed to challenge sexism, they often simultaneously police gender and sexuality—sometimes just as fiercely as the dominant, male-centered culture. Some feminists vocally condemn other feminists because of how they dress or for their sexual partners or practices. Among the queer activist community, lesbians and gay men have dismissed bisexuals, transgender people, and other gender and sexual minorities.

Serano argues that these biases, whether conscious or unconscious, infect theories, activism, organizations, and communities—and worse, they enable people to vigorously protest certain forms of sexism while simultaneously ignoring and even perpetuating others. Excluded advocates for a new approach to fighting sexism—called “holistic feminism”—that avoids these pitfalls and offers new ways of thinking about gender, sexuality, and sexism that foster inclusivity.
