Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress
Candacy Taylor
  - Tuesday, September 3
  - 7:00 PM

In large cities and small towns across the country, the best diners and coffee shops are more than just restaurants: they are neighborhood institutions that bring together communities. Counter Culture is a window into the lives of career waitresses who have worked in these diners and coffee shops for up to sixty years. Since 2001, Candacy A. Taylor has interviewed fifty-seven waitresses in thirty-eight towns and cities. Their compelling stories are complemented and enhanced by Taylor’s striking color photographs of the waitresses at work, a few of whom will join Taylor for the event. (Cornell University Press)

Return to Healing: Radical Health Care Reform and the Future of Medicine
Dr. Len Saputo & Byron Belitsos
  - Tuesday, September 15
  - 7:00 PM

National health insurance cannot by itself fix a misguided health care system that is bankrupting our country. Improved insurance coverage would leave corporatized health care, which drives up costs in the search for profit, and our nation’s dreadful inattention to prevention untouched. To achieve the goal of cost-effective health care for all, we need to embrace a new medical paradigm based on holism, prevention, and service. Join Saputo and Belitsos for an engaging discussion about the heath care system and discover a new RX for radical reform! (Origins Press)
